Both the longest and the largest island in the contiguous United States, Long Island extends eastward from New York Harbor to Montauk Point. Long Island has played a prominent role in scientific research and engineering, and is home to the Brookhaven National Laboratory in nuclear physics and Department of Energy research. Long Island lost its one professional sports in 2015 when the NHL’s New York Islanders moved to Brooklyn. Both of Long Island’s Nassau and Suffolk counties are home to thousands of restaurants, and are considered to be a veritable melting pot of every kind of ethnically-infused restaurant from Mexican to Hungarian to Indian. The Long Island Pizza Festival & Bake-Off is an annual competition in which small family owned pizzerias and restaurants within the area compete to be named best on Long Island.
